FiberWork's main resource is its highly qualified personnel who are very competent in their own fields - a select team of PhD professionals, researchers and technically high skilled engineers with proven professional merits in optical fiber technology, optical communication systems, optoelectronics, electronics, instrumentation, software, marketing, business and administration.

Motivation, initiative, dedication and entrepreneurship are also skills of its people. Some of these professionals have been hired through grants and sponsorships from scientific councils (Fapesp and CNPq) and special government programs.

Dr. Sérgio Barcelos, PhD, CTO

Dr. Sergio Barcelos obtained his PhD degree in optical fiber communications at the Optoelectronics Research Centre, Southampton, United Kingdom; his Master degree in coherent optical communications at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Unicamp, Brazil, and his electronics engineering degree at the Aeronautics Institute of Technology, ITA, Brazil. He is the founder of FiberWork Optical Communications Ltd., a company specialized in developing innovative fiber optic products. He has worked with Alcatel, Brazilian Research and Development Center for Telecommunications, Dept. of Communications of the Faculty of Electrical and Computing Engineering, Unicamp, Brazil.

Dr. Barcelos has been the coordinator of the work group on optical network elements of the Brazilian National Association for Technical Standards and is member of the IEEE/ComSoc & IEEE/Leos societies. He was the founder and the president of the first OSA international Student Chapter at Southampton University, UK.

Dr Barcelos has got over 50 publications in journals and conferences worldwide, 3 international patents and a British award for invention in fiber optics ("Metrology for World Class Manufacturing Award"). He was the invited organizer and chairman of the technical workshop “40Gb/s Networks and the PMD/Polarization Mode Dispersion Challenge”, which was an important event within the OFC/NFOEC-2007 Optical Communication Conference/National Fiber Optical Engineers Conference, Anaheim, March 2007.

Dr Barcelos has got over 50 publications in journals and conferences worldwide, 3 international patents and a British award for invention in fiber optics ("Metrology for World Class Manufacturing Award").

Dr. Barcelos links a profound and broad R&D background with strong experience in the real world applications of optical communication technology as well as high tech entrepreneurial skills. His expertise covers subjects as: DWDM & CWDM optical networking, 40 and 100Gb/s transmission, ROADM Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexing, optical cross connects, coherent optical communications, DP-QPSK and new optical modulation schemes, impairments in high capacity optical communications, chromatic dispersion and dispersion compensation techniques, Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD), fiber non-linearities, optical losses, fiber amplification technologies, optical components, sub-systems and systems, fiber metrology, fiber network field diagnosis, remote fiber network monitoring, availability and reliability of fiber optic networks, optical protection technologies, FTTH technologies, SONET/SDH, IP over DWDM, HFC/CATV networks, GBE & 10G Bit Ethernet, fiber sensors etc.

Management Team

Elso L. Rigon, CEO

Graduated at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), with Masters in physics and applied optical communications, Elso is the CEO of FiberWork Optical Communications. He has a great knowhow in research and technological development in the area of optical fiber communications, optical metrology, photonic crystals, DWDM, FTTH, limitations of optical networks, optical transmission of 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps optical communications, diffractive optics, nano-structures, holography, microlitografia and photonics in general.

Other than this, he received theoretical and practical training in FTTH technology at NTT West (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone West Corporation) in Osaka, Japan, organized by Japan International Cooperation Agency. He is a member of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and was founder and the first vice president of the OSA-Unicamp. Nowadays he is also the co-founder and CEO of iTech - Institute for Photonic Innovations. He has already published over 17 technical articles which had their patents registered in over 5 countries.

In FiberWork he also collaborates with the coordination of technology development projects with FAPESP / PIPE (Program for Innovation in Small Enterprises) and CNPq / PDNTM Program (Dissemination of New Technologies in Microelectronics), focusing on technological development of innovative products. Because of his wide knowledge in theoretical and experimental optics he had an important participation in FiberWork´s international projects held in places such as U.S., Turkey, Spain, Mexico and Brazil.

Kunio Oyama, Business Development Manager

Kunio Oyama joined FiberWork in May 2007. He brought an extensive experience in product development of optical communications and vast knowledge in telecommunications. He graduated in Electronic Engineering at the Technological Institute of Aeronautics (1980) and has a MBA from Fundação Getulio Vargas.

Along his career, he gained great experience with the development of products and solutions for the optical communication market and got involved in the design and deployment of optical networks and hybrid (fiber-coax). Previously, he had worked at innovative companies like Garcia Enterprises / MPB Communications (Canada), INPE (National Institute for Space Research), NEC Brazil and NEC Japan. He has a great know-how of PMI recommendations for project management and has international working experience: he spent 3 years working abroad at NEC Japan to develop new products for optical communications. He is also a collaborator of the Institute for Photonic Innovations – iTech.
